The Sacred Snake – THAN-XA

 

Introduction

The Sacred Snake THAN-XA (Thn-Xà) is an advanced quyn (form)—a structured set of choreographed martial movements. It belongs to the Hùng-Quyn group, known as “dynamic quyn, which is primarily designed for martial arts fighters.

However, THAN-XA goes far beyond combat. Its techniques and sequences reach into the subtle realms of strategy and the art of living, offering not only physical refinement but also philosophical insight. Through its practice, learners can gain guidance not just in martial technique but in personal development and life approach.

Within the Viet-Chi System—composed of eight disciplines—teachers from any branch may incorporate THAN-XA into their curriculum, either in full as a complete quyn or partially as standalone exercises, for both teaching and evaluation purposes.


The Mission of THAN-XA

The Sacred Snake THAN-XA serves three distinct missions, aligned with the progression of the practitioner:

• For Regular Students

To provide technical and physical training through a unique form that embodies the "Way of Water." Through the practice of doi-luyn (partner sparring), students develop familiarity with the techniques and spirit encoded in the form: stances, hand-knife strikes, kicks, blocks, jumps, indirect movements, redirections, strategies, surprise attacks, and more.

• For Advanced Black Belts

To enhance endurance, cultivate internal energy, and develop the strategic mindset required for deception in combat. Black Belts are encouraged to explore creativity through strategy-building and song-luyn (dual training). THAN-XA also offers a refined, shareable form to present their interpretation of the “Way of Water” to practitioners from other disciplines.

Note: This publication offers only a limited overview of this level, tailored for a general audience.

• For Red Belts (Masters)

To support Masters in the realization of their deeper missions. This area of training remains exclusive to Red Belt-level instruction and is not disclosed in this text.

The Structure of THAN-XA

THAN-XA is composed of six main sections. After the opening movement (A, facing South), the form primarily unfolds along the East–West axis, eventually circling back to the starting point, concluding with movements facing South (Zc and Zd).

This structure symbolically resembles a military campaign:

The General THAN-XA leaves his fortress, publicly declares war, and justifies his cause. After five victorious battles to the East and West, he returns proudly—with a Peace Accord in hand.

Each part of the form represents a stage in this campaign:

1.   Opening the Battle

2.   Preparing the Moves

3.   Multiple Attacks

4.   Surprise Attacks

5.   Flying Attacks

6.   Winning Peace

Through these phases, one can observe the dynamic movements of THAN-XA. What remains unseen—but equally essential—are the five invisible counterattacks delivered by adversaries defending against THAN-XA's strategy.

Imagine how thrilling it would be to witness these unseen moments!

These invisible responses become apparent only through partnered practice (doi-luyn)—where form meets interaction, and theory transforms into dynamic experience.

DAI-HOANG Quyen – The Great Clarity

INTRODUCTION

DAI-HOANG Quyen, or The Great Clarity, is a deeply profound and uniquely crafted martial art form (quyn or kata) that offers rich insights for serious practitioners.

Composed of nine movements, DAI-HOANG Quyen explores some of the most debated dimensions within martial arts: the balance between Hard and Soft approaches; the contrast between practical combat training and theoretical study; and the tension between traditional animal mimicking and symbolic interpretation, among others.

 

What sets Đi-Hoàng Quyn further apart is its innovative reconfiguration of the Eight Trigrams within a circular framework. This strategic interpretation offers a bold and thought-provoking challenge to the traditional "Early Heaven" arrangement found in the I Ching, inviting new reflections on martial philosophy and cosmology.

 

While the scope of this blog limits a full exploration of Đi-Hoàng Quyn, we are confident that dedicated instructors and advanced students will uncover within this form a wealth of knowledge—not only in martial technique and trigram theory, but also in deeper philosophical insights on life and strategy.

 







THE METHODOLOGY OF DAI-HOANG QUYEN

SITUATION
Martial arts are undeniably a noble discipline and an excellent physical practice. However, the needs and expectations of learners often extend beyond combat or sport. In response, a new path has emerged: the path of Educational Martial Arts—an approach that integrates physical training with broader philosophical, strategic, and educational dimensions.

To establish this path, the first essential step is to redesign the curriculum. But how should this be done? A clear, practical, and adaptable methodology is required.

PROBLEM
In January 1983, Master Phan Hoang—founder of VIETVODAO International—embarked on a year-long world tour, beginning in France. Along his journey, he visited temples and martial arts centers, and met with numerous masters and esteemed individuals. Through these encounters, he gathered a wealth of insights, experiences, and inspirations—layer upon layer of knowledge and practical wisdom.

Yet, the challenge was immense: how to structure and transmit such a rich and diverse body of ideas into a coherent model? During his travels, no single framework could fully encapsulate it.

SOLUTION
The solution came in the form of a powerful quyen (kata, or form) comprised of just nine movements. Each movement is designed to carry layered meaning and can be interpreted from multiple perspectives, offering a multidimensional teaching tool. The form functions as a compact yet profound educational structure.

The methodology of DAI-HOANG Quyen draws on five key interpretive frameworks:

A. Number Theory – to encode and structure instructions.
B. Posture Names – to define and categorize groups of techniques.
C. Animal Symbols – to convey training methods, combat strategies, and the art of war.
D. Eight Trigrams – to illustrate dynamic concepts and strategic combinations.
E. Way of Life – to guide personal behavior, ethics, and strategic thinking

Regarding Postures, we use each number to identify the corresponding posture, but keep in mind that the system of postures is independent to the system of number in the way of meaning and application. Each posture reflects a specific series of selected techniques. These diverse techniques can be learned at our seminars or in our documents and books.
